HPDE Overview

The STI brings 300+ hp, AWD traction, and rally-bred mechanical confidence to the track. The EJ257 engine makes boost aggressively and the DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) allows tuning of the front/rear torque split for different track conditions. In the wet or cold, nothing in this price range puts power down as effectively. On track, the STI feels planted and stable. The AWD system provides mechanical grip that lets you get on the throttle much earlier than RWD cars. Turn-in is not as sharp as a lighter RWD car, but the STI compensates with relentless traction on exit. The Brembo brakes on all STI models are strong, though they heat up quickly given the car's weight. The challenge is heat. The EJ257 is notorious for running hot, and the turbo adds enormous thermal load. The stock cooling system is marginal for sustained track use, and the boxer engine's packaging makes airflow management difficult. Oil temperatures climb rapidly, and the turbo system needs careful cool-down procedures after track sessions.

Why People Love It

The STI is the track car that works in any weather. Rain, cold, snow-dusted tracks — the AWD system puts power down when everything else is sliding. The rally heritage gives the car a toughness and mechanical confidence that is hard to replicate. When the turbo spools and all four tires are hooked up, the acceleration out of corners is addictive.

Why People Hate It

The EJ257 is a ticking time bomb on track. Ringland failure, head gasket failure, oil starvation — the engine has a laundry list of documented failure modes that become dramatically more likely under track conditions. You will spend more on cooling upgrades and engine reliability modifications than you spent on the car itself. The weight of the AWD system is a constant penalty, and the fuel consumption is brutal.
