HPDE Overview

The 981 Cayman is the last naturally aspirated Porsche Cayman, and many consider it the finest iteration. The chassis is stiffer than the 987, the steering is more precise (though it moved to electric assist), and the engine options are stronger. The GTS model with 340 hp is the one to get — it is the best naturally aspirated mid-engine Porsche you can buy. The 981 drives with a maturity that the 987 occasionally lacked. The chassis is composed at any speed, the brakes are strong, and the optional PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) provides a good track mode. The electric power steering is well-calibrated — not as communicative as the 987's hydraulic system, but more precise and consistent. No IMS bearing issue. No bore scoring concern. The 981 is a reliable platform that you can track with confidence.

Strengths

Last naturally aspirated Cayman — flat-six character without turbo lagStiffer chassis than 987 with improved body controlNo IMS bearing or bore scoring concerns — reliable engine platformGTS model produces 340 hp — genuinely quick on any trackPDK is one of the fastest dual-clutch transmissions available

Weaknesses

Electric power steering loses some road surface texture compared to 987 hydraulicHigher purchase price than 987 — still appreciating in valuePorsche maintenance costs remain significantThe 2.7L base model is underpowered for competitive track useNo factory aero options limit high-speed downforce
Why People Love It

The 981 GTS is the finest naturally aspirated mid-engine car Porsche made for the street. The flat-six at 7,400 RPM is intoxicating, the chassis balance is sublime, and the reliability is excellent. No IMS bearing to worry about. No bore scoring. Just pure, reliable, Porsche mid-engine driving bliss.

Why People Hate It

The electric steering, while good, is not the hydraulic masterpiece of the 987. Prices are climbing as people realize the 981 is the last NA Cayman. And Porsche maintenance costs remain a reality — everything is more expensive than the domestic competition.
