HPDE Overview

The 997 is the sweet spot of modern 911 ownership. The 997.1 (2005-2008) uses the Mezger-derived M97 engine, while the 997.2 (2009-2012) received the DFI direct-injection engine that is more reliable and powerful. Both handle like the rear-engine sports car that defines the genre. The 997 rewards a specific driving technique: late apex, trail-brake into the corner, and use the rear weight to rotate the car. The sensation of the rear engine pivoting the car around a corner is unique to the 911, and once you learn to exploit it, the car becomes devastatingly fast through corners. The 997.2 GTS is the sweet spot — 408 hp from the 3.8L with wider body, sport exhaust, and PCCB brakes optional. The PDK (997.2 only) is excellent on track.

Why People Love It

The 997 is the quintessential modern 911. The 997.2 GTS is fast, reliable, and sounds magnificent. The rear-engine handling, once mastered, is addictive.

Why People Hate It

The 997.1 IMS/bore scoring risk makes buying used stressful. The 997.2 is significantly more expensive. And 911 ownership always involves Porsche-level maintenance costs.
