HPDE Overview

The C6 Corvette improved on the C5 in every measurable dimension. The LS3 makes 430 hp, the Z06 LS7 produces a staggering 505 hp from a flat-plane-crank 7.0L V8 that revs to 7,000 RPM. The chassis is stiffer, the brakes are larger, and the suspension geometry has been refined. The C6 Z06 weighs just 3,132 lbs thanks to an aluminum frame, carbon fiber fenders, and a titanium exhaust — it is the lightweight LS V8 weapon. On track, the C6 Z06 is in a different league from the C5. The LS7 engine sounds like nothing else on Earth — a deep, mechanical growl that builds to a roar at 7,000 RPM. The car puts power down with confidence thanks to the limited-slip differential, and the magnetic ride suspension (on Grand Sport and later models) adapts to track conditions in real time. The C6 Grand Sport is arguably the sweet spot — it gets the wider Z06 body, bigger brakes, and magnetic ride without the high-strung LS7. The C6 Z06's LS7 has a well-documented valve guide failure issue that can destroy the engine. This must be addressed before track use.

Strengths

Weaknesses

Why People Love It

The C6 Z06 is the best naturally aspirated American track car ever made. The LS7 at 7,000 RPM through a titanium exhaust is an experience that will rearrange your priorities in life. At 3,132 lbs with 505 hp, the power-to-weight ratio rivals modern supercars. And thanks to the LS platform, maintenance and parts are a fraction of European competitor costs.

Why People Hate It

The LS7 valve guide issue is a sword of Damocles. A $3,000 preventive repair is required before you can trust the engine on track, and even then, the LS7 is more maintenance-intensive than the LS3. The aluminum frame on the Z06 is expensive to repair, making track incidents costly. And the Corvette interior, while improved over the C5, is still behind European competitors in fit and finish.

V8 track enthusiasts, NASA GTS1 competitors, LS engine lovers, and anyone who wants supercar performance for sports car money.
